Abstract

Applications Of The Soundscape Reconstruction (SR) Technology In Acoustic Ecology Research, Education And Entertainment

Constantinos Stratoudakis

SR (Soundscape Reconstructor) is a new technology proposed by the author at the SMC07 (Society of Music and Computing conference). The presented interface combines data that are used for the mapping of sonic environment, as well as sonic elements derived from field recordings and photographic material, in order reconstruct in-vitro the Soundscape of a given geographical area (in this case a protected area around Lake Antinioti, at northern Corfu, Greece). The system has also the ability to map video, data and graphics with geographical information resulting in a multimedia experience. This technology provides a new tool for studying the Soundscape of a natural environment but also suggests a type of interactive installation that can be used for educational or entertainment purposes resulting in an introduction of the audience in the concept of acoustic ecology. We will examine the applications of this technology in acoustic ecology research and suggest new types of interactive setups for the reconstruction of a Soundscape.

The scientific background for both the methodology of sampling and the technol-ogy of SR (Soundscape Reconstructor) is described in the paper “A Multimedia Interface for the dynamic reconstruction of the Soundscape based on the map-ping of its properties”, (SMC07 proceedings) .
