A Project Proposal and Artist Presentation for ISEA2008
Theme: Location Media
Step + Repeat: Singapore Cycle (location.media.remix)
The Step + Repeat Cycles are an ongoing series of media based location (site) remixes often resulting in a range or combination of: remote media and web publishings/broadcasts, site specific installations, recorded media for video and data projections, live performances and/or soundscape projects.
The visualizations and sonifications are unique remixed sequences derived from (artist and local/resident/user created databanks) using a range of performance based software in which sampled content and documents (digital photographs, video and audio) are fed live and manipulated in real-time.
Concept and Development:
With a nod toward Allen Sekula’s work: specifically “Fish Story” and Sekula's longstanding investigation of what he calls "the imaginary and material geographies of the advanced capitalist world." This Step and Repeat pieces chronicles (in a documentary fashion) the ironies, displacements, shifting values, economies and systems: the transformation of a place/site/city as an industrial and economic center shifting and the reclamation of areas of the city and countryside dedicated to old economies/technology by both nature and the population at large - a population with new needs but that also seeks to retain a core identity. As we have not had the opportunity to travel to Singapore-we are very excited at the opportunity realize and present a Step + Repeat: Singapore Cycle for ISEA 2008.
The work under “ideal circumstances” strives to engage site and community as seamlessly as possible using available technologies, ubiquitous computing and networks-allowing for as much collaborative and participatory exchanges in helping to realize the work. However, depending on real world environments and site conditions (logistics, remoteness, etc) we adapt using a range of technologies and strategies to gather media and sample data: including gps, locative and pervasive media as well as "older" field observation, data capture, recordings, and sensor/spectrophotometer input and readings.
The proposed Step + Repeat: Singapore Cycle (location as remix) iteration will use images, footage and ambient samples recorded just prior to (and during) ISEA2008 to generate the databanks to be remixed on site. The work will dynamically update and generate visualizations and sonifications (to be performed, exhibited, presented at he conference) that will explore, expand and reflect on the ISEA 2008 Locating Media theme which seeks to: examine how the specificities of location mediate and are mediated by both old and new technologies of information, communication and experience.
