Abstract

Borders in the City

Ayesha Hameed, Anita Shepp

We are interested in presenting an artist's talk about our collaborative performance project on internal borders in the city as they affect those 'without papers', refugees and people living in church sanctuaries. Using simple devices like FM transmitters, slide projectors, we embed testimonies, accounts and images of sanctuary in public spaces while marking off with thread, areas that immigrants cannot move freely in.

We would like to discuss our project in terms of how it intervenes in the field of locative media as it highlights the necessity to also examine restrictions to movement, to technologies of border-creation and counter technologies that attempt to bypass those walls.
